It was great to see how much exploring creative talismans spoke to you all. Through guiding you, I helped myself. I am surrounded by cards and gifts affirming my identity as a therapeutic facilitator but nothing that affirms me as a writer. I am also a writer –always have been. Now I'm finally ready to claim 'writer' as a core part of my identity, I'll need a writing talisman to hold me firm.
Lovely to have you there. Looking forward to your hummingbird painting session this weekend – and maybe there's a talisman-making collaboration in our future?
Next Wednesday's session prompts will be posted in the Subscriber Chat at 7 a.m. UK time on 1st July. It should be a fun one. I look forward to seeing what comes out of it!
Wednesday Write Together (24th June) – you're welcome to join!
With the heatwave this week, I wanted to bring something that helps us channel cool through our imagination and attention.
This week we're working with a poem about wild swimming – and what happens in the body when we do something that takes courage, even when every warm, comfortable part of us is arguing against it.
Before we read, we write. So come prepared to notice what your body does with heat, with cold, with the idea of plunging in.
A small invitation to get you ready:
- Make yourself as comfortable as you can for the heat. Iced drink, fan, open window – or if you want to really commit, swimsuits welcome too. We're going to imagine ourselves somewhere cold!
- You don't need to have ever swum outdoors. You just need a body that knows what it feels like to want to turn back – that particular pleasure that only comes from doing the thing you almost didn't.
Lovely group at yesterday’s Wednesday Write together session – thank you to all who joined. A few people mentioned wanting access to prompts when they're not able to. I’ll pop a link to the poem and prompt from yesterday in the subscribers chat tomorrow. Just checking with the author that she's happy for me to.
Please let me know moving forward what you prefer – to have the session recorded for subscribers, or to just have the prompts and resources shared in the subscriber chat where we can engage together there. As always, you're welcome to share what you write there too.
I chose it deliberately – knowing something about her life, her son, the quality of love and attention she brings to both.
I won't share what happened in the room. But I can tell you: she was already a poet. This morning she got a step closer to knowing it.
In this week’s Wednesday Write Together, we're working with Jessica Urlichs' Boys Will Be Boys – a poem that breathes new life into a phrase we all know.
You don't need to be a parent. You don't need to have a son. You just need to be someone who has ever been told – or told themselves – what you are, and what that means.
We'll read it together, write into whatever part speaks to you, and see what surfaces.
Loved how much creative talismans resonated with you. Guiding you helped me see my own blindspot: I'm surrounded by cards and gifts affirming my identity as a facilitator – but nothing that names me as a writer. That changes now.
This Wednesday Write Together (10th June) we're exploring creative talismans.
Not an object magically imbued with luck – more a touchstone to your creative practice. Something that fuels perseverance, delight, and trust in your voice.
It might be a mentor, a place where you feel most yourself, or an object that holds your creative why.
Or it might work differently – a shield, a mirror: something that reflects beliefs you've moved beyond. A reminder of what you've disowned.
Bring pencil and pen – and drawing materials if you'd like.
Next week's Wednesday Write Together: 3rd June – a little heads up: we're going somewhere a little different.
If you have a piece of writing you love – a poem, a song lyric, a passage from a novel, a speech, a quote – bring it along. Something you return to through reflection or re-reading, or just what feels right in this moment. It doesn't have to be highbrow – a children's book, pop lyrics, a thriller extract, all perfect. Just something you really enjoy.
If you can have the original words to hand, that's useful. But don't worry if you don't – a rough memory or a feeling will do.
